Overview
Approximately 12 kilometers north of Heraklion, the uninhabited island of Dia rises from the sea. With a length of about 5 kilometers and a width of roughly 3 kilometers, it presents an impressive silhouette that, when viewed from Heraklion, resembles a giant lizard or a dragon. This shape inspired an ancient legend: a huge sea monster once threatened Crete, but Zeus hurled a lightning bolt and turned the monster to stone – thus, Dia was formed.
The island is not only mythologically significant but also ecologically valuable. It is part of the Natura 2000 network and is home to rare animal species such as the Cretan wild goat, Kri-Kri, and Eleonora’s falcons. The untouched nature and crystal-clear waters make Dia a paradise for nature lovers and adventurers.
